Suite for Solo Viola in G Major Mvt2

Suite for Solo Viola 2012 Mvt 2: Courmande This is from a 5-movement piece for Solo Cello (and/or in this case Solo Viola) inspired by the Bach Cello Suite #1. In this movement Nils composes (improvised) a new melody line over the harmonic structure of the Courante movement of the Bach Suite #1. This work is part of a larger project composing Suites inspired by each 6 Cello Suites. Currently #1 and #3 are complete. In addition to these Solo pieces, Nils' is composing String Orchestra pieces inspired by each of the 6 suites. The score for this Suite (both Viola and Cello versions) as well as a work inspired by the C-Major Bach Suite are available here: www.nilsbultmann.com Recording of Cello version performed by Parry Karp is available on Innova Recordings and on streaming platforms.
Sonata for Solo Viola
Nils Bultmann: Sonata for Solo Viola (2006) Composed and performed by Nils Bultmann, Hertz Hall, UC Berkeley, 2006 This 12-minute Solo Viola Sonata was Nils' first 'official' (fully notated) composition. It travels through a wide range of musical and emotional terrain- beginning with a spacious introductory, exploratory, and yearning motive. As the piece unfolds, tensions rise leading us into a sudden wild storm of an obsessive (and perhaps even 'angry' ) rhythmic groove. All of this turmoil is ultimately integrated and synthesized in the end in the form of a ethereal soaring lyrical line (reminiscent of a bird flight) accompanied by bells chimes (left hand pizzicato).
